Standing Committee on Medical Education

What is the SCOME?

Watch this video to get to know our mission and projects.

The Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME) focuses on the medical education of medical students. Medicine is a long and demanding study programme that comes with a great deal of responsibility, choices, and effort. SCOME monitors how students experience their education and aims to support and guide them throughout this journey, provide additions where possible, and above all inspire them for their future careers.

SCOME Projects

SCOME organises several events throughout the academic year, press the buttons below to discover more about our projects!

Collaboration with SWOP

SWOP, the Student Working Group for Medical Education, is the student council representing medical students in Ghent. It serves as a platform to raise students’ concerns, questions, and suggestions to the medical faculty, while also allowing students to take positions on policy matters concerning the programme, faculty, or university. To achieve this, year representatives, board members, and active members take part in various councils and committees within the programme, collaborate with the faculty student council (StuGG), and organise a monthly General Assembly.
Thanks to the close connection between SCOME and SWOP, the LOMEs are also part of the SWOP board. In this way, they form the link that ensures strong cooperation between BeMSA Ghent and SWOP – Medical Student Council, while actively contributing to the improvement of medical education at Ghent University.

Questions? Remarks? Suggestions? Feel free to contact the Local Officers on Medical Education (LOMEs) or approach them directly.

Local Officers on Medical Education

The Local Officers on Medical Education (LOMEs) are the board members responsible for coordinating and managing SCOME within BeMSA Ghent. They support and guide the various medical education-related projects, organise activities and trainings, and ensure that students can actively contribute to improving medical education while developing themselves both academically and professionally.

Practicum Boosters

At the Skills Lab of Ghent University, medical students are taught a wide range of clinical skills. Unfortunately, there is often (too) little time available to practise these skills, and many of them cannot easily be trained at home.
In collaboration with the Skills Lab, BeMSA Ghent therefore organises the “Practicum Booster Skills” during the 2026–2027 academic year. During this evening, the Skills Lab provides several rooms where medical students can come together to practise using the available equipment.
These practice sessions are supervised by tutors from the master’s years. Throughout the evening, they also give short “tips-and-tricks” sessions at various stations. In about an hour, they highlight the key details, common exam pitfalls, and do’s and don’ts of each skill.
The skills are divided into four clusters, each in its own room:

  • Cardiology & Pneumology
  • Neurology and ENT
  • Locomotor system and surface anatomy

What After Basic Medical Training?

Do you sometimes wonder what you can do with a medical degree outside the classic clinical path? What options exist besides a specialisation in the hospital? Or what a career with, for example, Doctors Without Borders looks like? During ‘What After Basic Medical Training?’ we show how broad the future opportunities after a degree in Medicine can be. Various speakers talk about their own, less traditional careers and share their experiences, choices and tips. Of course, there is also room to ask all your questions. Get inspired and discover all the paths that lie open after your basic medical training!
